Athletes and Deviance
Athletes and Deviance Do Athletes engage in more deviant activities than non-athletes? Do athletes engage in more deviant acts than non-athletes? In this paper, I will look further into this question. I will examine all levels from high school to the professionals. Sports are assumed by many to promote those character traits that are desirable by most in society. These qualities are fair play, sportsmanship, obedience to authority, and hard work .1 Are all these things true about athletes? Do athletes really make good role models? There is a lot of debate on whether or not the use of drugs is a problem in the athletic system today. Over the years, it has become evident that athletes participate in deviant activities, and one of the main things that they partake in is the use of drugs. Alcohol, despite the increase in education and prevention efforts, remains the drug most widely used by high school students. Peer pressure also plays a large role in the amount of abuse that student do to their bodies. Many athletes try to duplicate what they see in the movies. For example, in 1995, a movie titled The Program came out. It was about a athletes, drugs, out, case, lot, high, people, been, school, tyson, alcohol, role, right, one, four, trouble, team, sports, year, life, brown, athlete, time, student, simpson, season, scene, make, just, good, first, ended, deviant, being, years, while, two, suspended, students, since, pressure, police, oj, non-athletes, movie, money, models, jail, happened, go
