Society Individuality is not that easy to be accomplished since the guidelines for our behavior and the way we as human beings are supposed to act are already stated by society. The differences between men and women (in terms of social characteristics) are the product of social and cultural factors. Gender roles are attitudes and activities that a society links to each biological sex. Basically, gender identity is about role-playing. Aspects of the male roles reflects the kind of assumptions we make about how men should behave and the characteristics they should have such as leadership and taking control of situations. This also applies to aspects of women’s roles where a woman is assumed to be more emotionally expressive than man, weak and with no voice of their own. David Gilmore uses the term “male script” in his essay “Performative Excellence: Circum Mediterranean” to describe the male guidelines or in other words the job men are expected to fulfill in order to be respected by society.
