The ideas of categorizing the people were not new even during the Anglo-Saxon time period; the trend has adapted to each environment since its earliest creations almost as far back as the earliest writings (Appiah 276). Every person has his or her own ideas and beliefs about individual’s differences, and consequently the beliefs result in discrimination towards the minority. “Prejudice is defined as having opinions without knowing the facts or to hold on to these opinions, even after the facts are known” (“Evolution” 1). Evidence of the Anglo-Saxon’s prejudices can be seen through their inequality, in their use of slavery, through the time in which they existed, and through their racism. Although the Anglo-Saxons were not the origin of prejudicial views, the culture contributed immensely to the growth of prejudices in a time when the ideas were still forming, and impact on cultures now is the result of the Anglo-Saxon’s eminence; evidence of the growth of prejudice can be seen through the division amongst the people.
Often times in schools, there is an obvious division or ranking amongst the students. This division also exists in all of society, and there is often a fine line between groups. Because these groups exist, there is an inescapable trend throughout the world in which people are divided or ranked among themselves. There have been many efforts to remove these forms of prejudice, but the utopian type lifestyle where all people are equal seems almost unrealistic. As in many cultures today, the Anglo-Saxons developed a system in which the people were divided into unequal groups, and a person’s status depended on his or her personal belongings. “There was no such thing as equality among the people” (Cheyney 42).
