Extrasolar Planets
Extrasolar Planets Are there planets in solar systems besides our own? This is a question the scientists have been trying to answer for ages. While it would seem implausible to believe that other solar systems are unable to form planets, until recently, astronomer’s here on Earth had been unable to confirm that planets existed outside of our solar system. By 1995, as many as eight extrasolar planets were suspected to exist. Their existence was based on the movement of their parent suns. The movement could be explained because of the gravity effects of the individual planets. (TMR-1C: A Runaway Planet) In 1997, the Hubble Space Telescope gave astronomers their first direct look at what was suspected to be a planet, subsequently named TMR-1C. First identified by Susan Terebey of the Extrasolar Research Corp in Pasadena, California, it was suspected at the time that this planet was traveling through space. The theory was the planet formed in a two-star system and the gravity pulls from the two stars caused a “sling-shot” effect and sent the star hurtling through space. Estimated to be 2-3 times larger than Jupiter, the confirmation of the existence of this planet planets, planet, extrasolar, been, tmr-1c, suspected, space, solar, size, two, system, star, first, existence, earth, discovered, astronomers, while, unable, through, temperatures, telescope, systems, savage, recently, movement, marcy, larger, jupiter, identified, hubble, gravity, formation, form, estimated, california, butler, because, based, background, approximately, young, washington, vicinity, using, until, university, two-star, trying, traveling
