Bacterial Symbiosis
Bacterial Symbiosis Bacterial symbionts may be used as vehicles for expressing foreign genes in arthropods. Expression of selected genes can render an arthropod incapable of transmitting a second microorganism that is pathogenic for humans and is an alternative approach to the control of arthropod-borne diseases. We discuss the rationale for this alternative approach, its potential applications and limitations, and the regulatory concerns that may arise from its use in interrupting disease transmission in humans and animals. * For more than 80 years, insecticides have been one of the primary means of controlling insect-borne diseases. Recently, however, the control of insect pests and vectors of disease has become increasingly difficult for various reasons, including the emergence of insecticide resistance, changes in the environment, and reduction in public health interventions due to social and economic problems in countries where insect-borne diseases are endemic. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 125 arthropod species are resistant to at least one, and often two or more, insecticides (1).
