Benjamin Franklin Benjamin Franklin Benjamin Franklin Benjamin Franklin was born in Boston Massachusetts on January 17, 1706 to Josiah and Abiah Franklin. He came from a family of 17 children in which he was the 15th child. His dad was a candle maker and a soap maker. When he was ten years old he was forced to quit school after only two years. His father wanted him to work full time as a candle maker and to learn a trade. He wasn’t happy being unable to attend school for he loved reading and writing. He wasn’t very good at arithmetic, but he did miss school. At the age of 12 his father convinced him to go work for his brother as an apprentice printer. He ended up in Boston Massachusetts at his brother’s house. His brother’s name was James and he ran a print shop. Ben went to work as a print layer and found this job to be fascinating. He loved setting type and could read to his hearts content. He soon found himself not only reading but also writing.
