The Spanish Inquisition
The Spanish Inquisition The Spanish Inquisition The Spanish Inquisition was a judicial institution established by the church in Spain during the Middle Ages. It was in charge of seeding out Jews whom, because of the pressure, basically instantly converted to Christianity. The Spanish Inquisition occurred from fourteen seventy-eight to eighteen thirty-four. Although after the seventeen hundreds it was not nearly as violent as it’s early years. The Spanish Inquisition is one of the most deadly and violent inquisitions in history. The Spanish Inquisition was set up to rid the country of fake Christians. Originally Spain was a country full of many religions including Catholicism, Islam, Protestantism, and Judaism. After the crusades and conquest of Spain by Christian Spaniards of Spain by Christian Spaniards the leaders of Spain wanted to unify the nation. They felt the best way to do this was to unify them in their religions. They then asked the pope for permission to start an inquisition to get rid of non-Catholics and he pope agreed. Ferdinand and Isabella were the rulers in charge when the Inquisition began. Isabella didn’t want to do it at first, but Thomas de Torquemada convinced her it was necessary.
