The Effectiveness Of Psychotherapy: The Consumer Reports Study
The Effectiveness Of Psychotherapy: The Consumer Reports Study The Effectiveness of Psychotherapy: The Consumer Reports Study Upon reading this selection, I found myself wondering why an issue that is as personal as one's mental health and the need to seek psychotherapy was included in a questionnaire that also asks about one's preference of automobiles and refrigerators. What kind of exciting new correlations will be made between those who seek psychotherapy and the kinds of cars they drive? While I do agree that there is a need to determine if psychotherapy "consumers" feel that such therapy is effective, I don't agree that effectiveness can or should be measured by the results obtained in a self-reporting, non-representative type of questionnaire that also asks about your dishwasher. First, the results of this survey should be discarded altogether. In my opinion, there were too many problems with the way this study was done to consider it to be a valid indicator of whether psychotherapy is effective or not. In the text, Taking Sides: Clashing Views on Controversial Issues in Abnormal Psychology (2000), Seligman states that of the 180,000 readers who received the questionnaire, "approximately 7,000 subscribers responded to the mental health questions (p. 123)."
