Sibling Incest
Sibling Incest DiGiorgio-Miller, J. (1998). Sibling incest: Treatment of the family and the offender. Child welfare, 3, pp. 335-346. Within this article the author examines the etiology of sibling incest, the intake process, treatment, the safety plan for the victim, and termination of treatment with the family. She describes the etiology of sibling incest from a family systems perspective, and this is evidenced by her statements that, “family dynamics precipitate the offender’s acting out against a sibling. While the offender’s own internal factors lead to acting abusively, the choice of a family member to abuse occurs within the context of the family system” (p. 337). This was an important distinction to make, that family dynamics essentially set the stage for the abuse to occur, but that it is the offender’s “own internal factor’s” which lead to the abuse, thus taking some of the “blame” off the family. However, DiGiorgio-Miller is quick to point out that “the abuse may be connected to the offender’s own perception of his or her status in the family. The offender may have a privileged position with a parent, or may not have learned limits from a neglectful parent” (p. 337). The author then connects the possible etiology of sibling incest, sibling, family, sexual, treatment, authors’, abuse, families, victim, dynamics, author, should, plan, case, study, parental, offenders, clinician, article, siblings, provides, sample, safety, pp, parents, offender, must, jim, incestuous, example, digiorgio-miller, within, while, victimization, seems, participants
