The Overthrow Of The Arbenz Government
The Overthrow Of The Arbenz Government THE OVERTHROW OF THE ARBENZ GOVERNEMT U.S. INTERVENTION IN GUATEMALA 1. Introduction In 1954 the democratically elected government of Jacobo Arbenz Guzman was overthrown by a small band of rebel forces led by Colonel Carlos Castillo Armas. This was no typical homegrown coup however; the Central Intelligence agency of the United States of America played an integral role in the takeover. While the Revolutionary regime of Arbenz had inherent flaws, catering too much to foreign capital for one, without the CIA’s involvement the coup in Guatemala could never have succeeded. With the success of their covert operation in Guatemala the blossoming CIA grew overconfident in its abilities, directly leading to the subsequent Bay of Pigs fiasco in Cuba. Economic interests of the United Fruit Company played a role in the intervention, but the true motivation for the U.S involvement was a disproportionate fear of Communism taking hold in the Western Hemisphere. guatemala, government, united, arbenz, cia, state, fruit, american, ufco, officials, land, under, intelligence, company, communist, while, reform, guatemalan, states, agency, revolution, pgt, central, department, support, regime, pbsuccess, overthrow, operation, dulles, administration, war, soviet, party, new
