Chicago Housing Authority
Chicago Housing Authority Redevelopment of Chicago Housing Authority In 1995 the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) took control of the Chicago Housing Authority in an attempt to take them off the federal list of troubled housing authorities. HUD assumed administrative control of the day-to-day CHA operations. This federal takeover was the last workable option for rescuing the CHA, the nations third largest housing authority serving over 130, 000 residents. Much was done to improve the living conditions for those residents and in 1998 the CHA was removed from the federal list. HUD and the CHA are still in the process of redeveloping public housing where communities can grow and contribute to their neighborhood. Their overall objective is to build low-rise housing integrating them into mixed-income communities. (CHA web site) HUD believes that if they integrate public housing into neighborhoods that a lot of people will benefit. They feel that residents will feel safer because the neighborhoods will not be defined as ghettos. They will be able to live in a less populated area with reduced crime and increased safety.
