Langston Huges
Langston Huges James Langston Huges was born on February 1, 1902, in Joplin Missouri, to Carrie and James Nathaniel Huges. He lived in New Mexico, Missouri, and Kansas. When his mother and Father separated, he moved to Lawrence, Kansas with his grandmother. After not even a year with his grandmother, he moved in with his mother and step-father in Lincoln Illinois. There he went to a grammar school were he was elected class poet. Later, after moving to Cleveland, Ohio he became editor of his high school, which he later graduated from. In 1921 he entered Columbia University in New York. He published many children’s poetry in A Brownie’s Book. From 1921 to 1924 Huges took on many jobs, including a cooks helper on a tramp steamer and later a cook in Paris. By 1925 he had moved back with his mother in Washington, D.C. and won 1st prize for poetry in opportunity Contest. He also won 2nd prize for an essay and 3rd for poetry in The Crisis magazines. Also in 1925, Huges meet a man named Carl van Vechten. Carl Van Vechten was a large part of the Harlem Renaissance, he was a renowned music critic, novelist, and photographer. Vechten introduced Huges poetry and writing to Alfred Knopf. Knopf was a New York book publisher, published, year, poetry, later, huges, book, university, lincoln, books, yet, won, vechten, school, received, one, honorary, another, after, york, writing, van, traveled, time, three, simple, same, renaissance, prize, poet, new, moved, mother, life
