Fibre Optics
Fibre Optics What is Fiber Optics? Fiber optics is a method of transmitting data that does not use electricity through a conductor to transmit information. Modified light is used to quickly transmit data over long distances through an insulated glass fiber-type material. Fiber optic cables make use of total internal reflection. If you put two prisms next to each other, you can refract the light around so it travels around a corner. Fiber optics is used mainly in telecommunications to transmit information such as pictures, video, etc. and is currently the best long distance communications method. Optical fibers are immune to electromagnetic interference (from lightning, nearby electric motors etc.) and to crosstalk from neighboring wires. To keep a signal from weakening, optical fibers require fewer repeaters over a given distance than does copper wire. The components that make up the fiber optic circuit are the light source, the detector of the light source, and the optic fiber itself. The light source is known as the transmitter. It converts the electrical signal into a light signal. The signals are sent as light pulses along the fiber.
