Tiresias
Tiresias Tiresias Tiresias is a famous, and very well acknowledged, blind Greek prophet. He plays an important part in books like: The Odyssey, Oedipus the King, and The inferno. In all three texts Tiresias is depicted as a wise old man. He is considered to be a respectful soothsayer and is often requested to help foretell the future. In The Odyssey, one of Homer’s epic poems, Tiresias is placed deep inside the underworld. Odysseus, the main character, has to desperately search for Tiresias in order to find out information on how he can reach home. Tiresias comes through with helping the lost warrior and warns him about the future: “under strange sail shall you come home, to find your own house filled with trouble” (Homer, The Odyssey 188). Tiresias also helps Oedipus in Sophocles’ Oedipus the King. In this play, the city of Thebes is in great danger from a plague that was caused by the murder of the former king, Laius. Tiresias is called upon to provide the king and his people information regarding the misery laid on the city. Forcefully, Tiresias speaks and announces that Oedipus is the one who has caused tiresias, oedipus, king, people, odyssey, inferno, dante, man, homer, hell, good, three, sent, role, play, own, one, odysseus, made, information, home, help, great, future, find, different, city, both, because, very, underworld, texts, sophocles, similar
