Grape Production in New York

Grapes are a major crop grown in New York and other areas around Lake Erie.  This area is also known as wine country because of the abundance of grapes grown in this region. These grapes are mostly used for making juice but they are also harvested for making varieties of wine.
	Concord grapes are the most popular grapes grown around Lake Erie and Chautauqua, in New York.  This region produces approximately 121,697 tons a grapes a year.  There are two hundred days in the growing season, and there is a total of 18,885 acres of grapevines around the Lake Erie area.  The grapes grown are mostly used in making grape juice for Welch’s juice companies, making New York the largest grape juice producing state in America. (Uncork New York)  They are also used in making some types of wine.  This region contains a total of eight bonded wineries.  The region includes French American and European wine grapes used in these wineries.
