The Virgin Mary Of England The Virgin Mary Of England The Virgin Mary of England Elizabeth is a film about the early years of the reign of Queen Elizabeth I of England. The movie shows how Queen Elizabeth is given the power to rule England and is faced with challenges. Elizabeth's reign was threatened largely because she did NOT have absolute power. The whole movie portrays Queen Elizabeth in danger and hated by powerful enemies, but in the end Elizabeth relies upon the most ruthless of her counselors, in her case the master Francis Walsingham, to crush her foes and ensure her survival. Queen Elizabeth tries to unite Catholics and Protestants and establish one to govern England, but both groups want to be supreme. The most powerful scenes in the movie were when the three Protestant 'heretics' were burned at the stake and when Queen Elizabeth becomes the Virgin Queen, married to England, in one of history's greatest makeovers. The significance of this movie is the life and experience of Queen Elizabeth. Throughout the movie the question “Who can you trust” is asked. England at this time is torn between the Catholics and Protestants.
