Population Growth
Population Growth California Government Problems: Population Growth. California is currently the most populous state in the nation, with an estimated state population in excess of 32 million people. By 2025, California’s population is estimated to grow to over 70 million. Furthermore, more than half the population growth in the 1990s came from immigration. The combination of high population and high immigration rates creates unique problems for the California government. One issue in California’s government is Education. As the population grows, the need for education services at all ages grows. However, schools are already crowded, and the high cost of living is a deterrent for most teachers that would otherwise move to California. During the 1980’s California dropped from the top 3 in per-student spending to the bottom 10 in the nation. Standard test scores suffered as a result. In short, the State Government is forced to invest more funds in an already under-captialized education system, or risk dropping further behind in national rankings for education levels. It is estimated that state would have to build a classroom every hour, and a school every day just to meet the increased enrollments. Transportation is also a key factor in California.
