Scarlet Letter
Scarlet Letter In The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, the setting is 17-century Boston Massachusetts, in a puritan colony. Hester Prynne, a passionate young woman, is the main character and the protagonist. Hester marries an elderly scholar named Chillingworth, the antagonist. . He disguises himself as a doctor when he returns to Boston to get revenge on Hester’s anonymous lover. He sends Hester ahead to America, but never follows her. While Chillingworth was away Hester has an affair with Dimmesdale, the minister. Dimmesdale is a young man who has achieved fame in England as a theologian. In a moment of passion Hester and him become lovers. He does not confess his sin publicly like Hester, who wears the scarlet “A” for everyone to see, he secretly tortures himself. Pearl is Hester’s illegitimate child. Pearl is a young girl with a moody mischievous spirit, and she can pick up on things people cannot. The conflict in this story is man vs. society over love and sin. The books rising action is when Hester and Pearl stand on the scaffold for the town to stare at in disgrace, also when chillingworth comes hester, sin, pearl, dimmesdale, chillingworth, young, wears, society, end, action, town, story, scarlet, scaffold, revenge, meaning, man, himself, hester’s, confess, boston, although, able, yet, woman, whole, while, way, wanted, vs, tortures, things, theologian, strongest, strong, stare
