East of Eden
East of Eden In the novel, East of Eden by John Steinbeck, Catherine Ames is one of the main characters. She is introduced to the reader as a monster and as time goes on, she possesses both monster like and animal qualities and hurts many people. As Catherine she gets older and wiser, she gets more evil and displays her monster and animal like characteristics. She knows she is powerful and indestructible by virtually anybody. She has manipulated and tricked many people in her life causing them to go to the extreme... death, only someone nonhuman could be so controlling over almost everybody. Catherine “Cathy” shows her evilness and her monster like behavior in many scenes throughout the book and she brings more character and excitement to the book. Steinbeck illustrates Cathy as being a monster , “I believe there are monsters born in the world” ( Steinbeck 72) Steinbeck also says, “ It is my belief that Cathy Ames was born with the tendencies, or lack of them, which drove and forced her all of her life,” (Steinbeck page 72). Cathy knew how to use these powers to her advantage, she got everything that she wanted from using these powers. Cathy used this to her advantage also by making people uneasy, but not so uneasy that cathy, steinbeck, people, monster, animal, cathy’s, human, town, look, ames, about, world, think, teeth, sharp, reader, make, life, house, head, eyes, evil, characteristics, character, born, wanted, uneasy, two, twisted, trying, time, these powers, someone, smarter, set, send, screech, says, said, runs, rather, pictures, page, out, one, novel, name, murder, might, lived
