!984 Essay
!984 Essay "George Orwell's 1984 is the expression of a mood, and it is a warning (Erich Fromm)." After Word War II, many people who read this novel experienced mixed reactions. It cannot be denied however, that George Orwell made some stunning predictions about the future and also took some important metaphors from the past and present. Therefore, 1984 stands as a symbol of a way of life that we hope will never exist, but in so many ways has already begun. In 1984, Orwell illustrates a picture of a totalitarian future. Although the action deals in the future, there are a couple of elements and symbols taken from the present and past. For example, Emanuel Goldstein, the main enemy of Oceania, is, as one can see in the name, a Jew. Orwell draws a link to other totalitarian systems of our century, like the Nazis and the Communists, who had anti-Semitic ideas. They also used Jews as so-called scapegoats to blame for all the bad and evil things in Germany and other surrounding countries. This also shows that totalitarian systems want to arbitrate their perfection. In addition, Emanuel Goldstein somehow also resembles Trotsky from a Stalinized proles, 1984, party, totalitarian, orwell, one, oceania, never, future, felt, way, until, trotsky, things, terrible, systems, society, russian, revolution, present, population, past, outer, old, live, life, hope, goldstein, george, orwell, emanuel, conscious, become, already, after, addition, years, word, women, winston’s, winston, ways, warning, war, wanted, view, ussr, under
