The Tonowi The Tonowi The Tonowi Influence The Kapauku people are found in the western area of the island New Guinea. They are an egalitarian tribe-level society whose complexities of trade are significantly linked to their political infrastructure of the ‘big man’ system. The Kapauku people are a unique society because of their nearly capitalist natures. While classified as egalitarian (no rank structure within the tribe), they have a huge focus on individual wealth, ownership, and assembly of wealth in the form of sweet potatoes, pigs, and cowrie shells (which function as a monetary exchange item). Their capitalist views of wealth and most especially ownership of personal items sets them apart and impacts the style of leadership that the Kapauku use. The concentration on generosity that identifies the tonowi or the ‘big man’ in the village is at odds with the Kapauku habit of keeping track of ownership on every item, from the wooden tiles used for building their houses to each plot of garden area. Because everything is owned by individuals, this focus on generosity to set apart the tonowi of the village can be difficult.
