Lexington Lexington and Concord The Revolutionary war in 1775 started because of the events that had taken place in one night. Tension had been growing between the American colonies and their mother country, Britain, ever since the French and Indian War in 1763. Because of this, the colonies started drilling militia and stockpiling weapons and supplies. When General Gage of the British army found out, he gathered about 750 men to seize and destroy colonial supplies and to capture John Hancock and Sam Adams. However, their plan failed mainly due to the actions on one brave colonist, Paul Revere. Paul Revere was part of a committee whose purpose was to spy on the British soldiers and the American loyalists.
